  • The Power of Humility

‘Humility is a mysterious power which, when a man receives it, clothes his soul in the very garment the Creator wore when He came down to earth. Whoever is covered with it walks in safety, for God Himself dwells in his meekness, and the demons flee at the sight of the Lord’s raiment.’

    Isaac of Nineveh

‘In the culture and the historical moment in which we find ourselves, it may seem strange to speak of humility, when what appears to take priority is a kind of exaltation of self-assertion, independence and autonomy.

Humility does not enjoy a good reputation today, and perhaps this is also because, besides not being practised, it is not truly known.

Many confuse it with an inferiority complex, or with insecurity or a lack of character. In short, to speak of humility today as something positive is, in most circles, unacceptable, since this quality is associated with weakness, low self-esteem, self-contempt and other such things…’

It is very easy to blend into our surroundings and fall into the same prejudices, forgetting the deep meaning of humility, forgetting even the very words of Jesus, who is ‘meek and humble of heart’ and who invites us to be like Him (a new way of being, a becoming Christ-like).
